Let's be honest, 2020 has been pretty brutal so far. Through the sadness, uncertainty and discovering a new way to navigate our way through what should have been just another year though, there have definitely been some rays of sunshine.
For me I have literally had two wins, and I still can't quite take it all in!
Back in January, after following inspirational businesswoman Jacqueline Gold on Twitter for a while, I decided to be brave and send a pitch to her as part of her #WOW competition. Jacqueline looks for businesses that are interesting, that have strong brand values and that she thinks have the potential to grow and succeed in their industry, then chooses three... one of which was me!!
Jacqueline said “Gemma’s creativity and passion for working to end homelessness through her products sets this company apart. I wish her every success in the future."
This was the first time I had entered, so I was even more over the moon, then the wonderful Bedford Independent wrote a lovely article, which was the icing on the cake, thanks team!
After having a difficult few months, where I lost my creative mojo for a while, I decided at the beginning of July to be bold and brave and tweet Theo Paphitis for his #SBS competition. I had tweeted him for this on a couple of occasions over the last 2 years, but didn't really sell myself. Being able to donate actual money to Signposts in Luton for their new accommodation had given me the boost that I needed. I felt confident that I could achieve more and support more projects striving to end rough sleeping. So I just went for it! It took me ages to compose the tweet, getting my personality, mission, brand and products over in one tweet, wasn't easy, but what did I have to lose? Monday night 8pm, Theo announced his chosen six, and my phone went crazy! I'm so proud to now be a #SBS winner!!!
Small business champion and Ryman Stationery, Robert Dyas and Boux Avenue Chairman, Theo Paphitis, said: “We are thrilled to welcome new #SBS members every week and highlight just how important it is to support our small businesses here in the UK. My vision is that everyone who has ever won an #SBS re-tweet from me becomes part of a friendly club; like-minded individuals who can share successes and learnings. The website will also give a valuable profile to the winners chosen and I wish Gemma and her business On The Map UK every success.”
I couldn't be happier! These two wins will now be put to good use, helping me to help more people. There is so much more to come and I hope you will join me on this journey.
